Painting the roof yourself

Painting a roof requires a special approach both when performing the work and when selecting appropriate paints and varnishes. Choosing a roof paint requires taking into account many nuances.
Features
Roof painting should be done according to the material. This may be due not only to the desire to update, but also to ensure the protection of the coating from various atmospheric conditions and adverse factors,
Among them:
Ultraviolet radiation;
Precipitation;
Wind and snow load;
The influence of microorganisms and many others.
In this case, the choice of paints and varnishes is extremely important, because the durability of the coating and the lifespan of the roofing material depend on how correctly it is selected.
Requirements
Roof paints and varnishes are subject to a number of requirements.
Resistance to atmospheric and other adverse factors. This includes not only the effects of prolonged exposure to precipitation or sunlight, but also temperature changes. It is important that the paint is sufficiently flexible, since some roofs (for example, metal) expand when heated, and the paint must expand with them.
Variety of colors. This is especially important when painting the roof of a house with an unusual facade design. In such situations, classic brown, green and dark gray will not be enough. Interesting solutions such as yellow, black or purple may be required.
Attractive appearance. The color should be uniform, not fade or lose its original appearance over time.
Roof material
The type of paint is selected based on the roof material. Even the highest quality paint will not apply properly if it is not compatible with the roof material.
Thus, all roofing materials can be divided into two broad groups: galvanized roofing (galvanized) and other metal (profiled steel, corrugated iron, etc.)
Black metalroof
Working with ferrous metal is somewhat more difficult. This is because this material reacts to temperature fluctuations and is susceptible to corrosion. It is important to note that paint intended for ferrous metals should be moisture resistant, ideally with anti-corrosion additives, especially if rust spots are already visible in various places. Elasticity is an important factor here to prevent the coating from cracking when heated.
Additionally, it is worth purchasing a primer designed for metals, as improper treatment of the roof can cause the paint to peel, leaving the overall appearance unattractive.
Galvanized metal
The positive aspect of working with galvanized metals is that they do not require priming. Priming is only required in areas where corrosion has begun. However, it is important to remember that the self-adhesion of the galvanized coating has poor properties and paint that is not properly treated will not adhere. It is important to ensure high adhesion and elasticity. Only in this case will the coating be of high quality. Preliminary cleaning is of paramount importance.
Non-ferrous metals
Roofs made of non-ferrous metals – such as copper, aluminum, or zinc – are the least common. This is due to their high cost. Accordingly, paints and varnishes for these options are also limited.
It is important to consider factors such as electrical conductivity, high elasticity, adhesion and resistance to mechanical damage. Non-ferrous metals are usually not susceptible to corrosion, so an anti-corrosion compound is not required. However, it is better to use a moisture-resistant paint.
For each option, you can choose a specific type of paint. Although some of them can be expensive, remember that purchasing paint and painting the surface saves you from having to quickly replace the entire roof, which will cost significantly more.
Types
Not all paint and varnish compositions can be used for painting a roof. Some of them are universal and are used not only for roofing, while others are suitable only for painting roofs. High-quality universal paints are similar to paints from specialized brands, but only specific paints are suitable for certain types of roofs.
There are many types of paints and varnishes, including alkyd, epoxy, and many others, but only a few are used more frequently. It is out of place to discuss the options used by professionals here, as working with them requires specialized knowledge and skills.
So-calledoil paint
Oil-based paints are initially used on metal roofs to protect the sheets during transportation, installation and initial use. Many choose oil-based paints due to their availability, but in reality the situation is more complicated. Despite the apparent savings, oil-based paints are unable to adequately protect the rough surface of the roof from atmospheric influences. Elasticity is practically absent, which leads to rapid cracking of the painted layer, requiring repainting every 3-5 years.
The savings are quite questionable, both in terms of cost and time.
Acrylic
This variety is considered one of the best. They are distinguished by the ideal properties required for roofing paints: high elasticity, resistance to ultraviolet radiation and excellent adhesion. The properties of the paint can also be modified by adding various additives.
The only drawback is the high price. Acrylic paints are one of the most expensive. However, when recalculated, the price does not seem so impressive, considering that the coating can last up to 25 years without losing its properties.
Anti-corrosion
These are the same acrylic compounds, but with the addition of special additives that prevent rust. As a rule, it is not recommended to apply anti-corrosion paints to damaged areas. It is better to treat metal sheets before the first rain to ensure maximum surface protection.
It is best to treat a black metal roof with anti-corrosion paint. This will provide reliable protection and save you the cost of replacing damaged sheets later.
RubberS
Rubber paints also belong to the acrylic group. They can be used on both slate and metal.
In addition to a wide range of colors, rubber paints and varnishes have other advantages:
Heat resistance;
Excellent waterproofness;
Improved adhesion;
Resistance to ultraviolet rays;
have anti-corrosion properties;
Can be used for a long time;
Withstands significant temperature fluctuations due to increased elasticity;
They do not have a strong toxic odor;
Resistant to mechanical damage;
They inhibit the development of microorganisms.
Therefore, rubber paints are considered the only universal option suitable for painting any roof.
Rust-resistant
A subtype of anti-corrosion paints; they can be used to paint already corroded surfaces. Although you will need to prepare the substrate first, you will not have to completely remove the rust. They contain special additives that cover existing corrosion spots and prevent them from spreading to “undamaged” metal. Rust-resistant paints can be used when preventive painting of a newly installed roof is overdue and small signs of rust have appeared. It is better not to process heavily damaged metal sheets. The best solution is to completely replace them and repaint them.
For galvanized roofs
Galvanized steel requires specialized paint. The best solution is to choose those types that are indicated as suitable for painting roofs made of this material. If a suitable paint is not available, you can use rubber paint. Remember that it is important to properly prepare the galvanized roof before painting, especially if a non-specialized paint is chosen. This will ensure the best adhesion of the rubber paint to the surface and will also allow it to retain all its properties.
Design and color
Roof paints are available in a variety of colors. They can complement facades of various design styles, including traditional (country style, classic), ethnic (Mediterranean or eco-friendly) or modern (high-tech, contemporary).
Surface preparation
The surface must be thoroughly prepared.
This requires several stages:
Remove all debris (such as fallen leaves) from the roof. The surface will be cleaned of visible dirt and stains.
Rust is cleaned with a wire brush.
Then the roof is filled: cracks are sealed and any defects are treated.
The surface is washed with water and then cleaned thoroughly.
If the rust is only on the surface of the material, it should be treated with anti-corrosion compounds. If the corrosion has also affected the inner surface, it is better to replace the entire sheet of metal with a new one.
Ground covering works are being carried out.
What should you wear?
Standard methods are used to remove roof paints and varnishes:
Wide brush;
Roller;
Spray.
There are also professional compressors, but here you will need the direct help of a specialist.
